Tools for Learning™ Math Intervention Project (2009 – 2011)
In early 2009, I was asked by the Special Education
Director of the Windham School District to design a math intervention
project to improve math outcomes at their middle school. In this two-year
project that was launched in the summer of 2009, the middle school team
consists of Grades 6, 7 and 8 math teachers and special education teachers
who support students in these grade levels. Each math classroom was
equipped with an interactive whiteboard along with 20 net books per grade
level that would be shared between two math teachers. In addition, Explore
Learning Gizmos was licensed for each math teacher and for the special
education teachers.
In this project, math teachers are building math units in Moodle to provide
access to the math curriculum for all students (a key principle of Universal
Design for Learning – multiple means of representation) within a lesson
design that includes consistent structure so that both instruction and
student learning is being supported. The type of supports for students
includes the use of math videos, online sites that support independent
practice and understanding of math concepts using a visual math vocabulary
website. Teachers are also including formative assessments using online
assessment tools that can inform their instruction.
The local evaluation is being conducted by Joyce LaTulippe of The EdValuate Group

21st Century Math Classroom Project (2010-11)
Maple Ave. Elementary School – Claremont
Unity Elementary School - Unity
The Tools for Learning™ 21st Century Math Classroom
Project is a New Hampshire
ARRA funded (Title IID) project designed to build 21st Century Classrooms. The
professional development design was based upon the research of the Maine’s
Impact
Study of Technology in Mathematics (MISTM) project and three recommendations
from USDOE - IES (Institute of Educational Sciences) Report “Assisting Students
Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and
Middle Schools”.
The Tools for Learning™ 21st Century Math Classroom Project is a hybrid
professional development model that includes face-to-face workshops, onsite
consultation and training, online support, facilitation and training in Moodle
to create a professional learning community and peer coaching and collaboration.
The goals of the Tools for Learning™ professional development to create 21st
Century Classrooms are fourfold:

1. Content: To deepen teachers’ mathematical content knowledge in the
areas of Data, Statistics and Probability and Geometry and Measurement in
the Grade Level Expectations of the New Hampshire’s Mathematics Curriculum
Framework.
2. Pedagogy: To improve teachers’ pedagogical practice in technology within
the 21st Century mathematics classrooms by applying principles of Universal
Design of Learning.
3. Technology Integration: To develop and apply universally designed
strategies that support the integration of technology for the teaching,
learning, and assessment of mathematics.
4. Professional Learning Community: To engage teachers in meaningful
interaction and dialogue about mathematics and technology integration
through face-to-face and online environments.
The local evaluation is being conducted by Joyce LaTulippe of The EdValuate
Group and the NH state evaluation is being performed by Hezel Associates.
